A tooth extraction is a procedure in which a dentist carefully removes a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. Extractions are usually done when a tooth is badly decayed, broken, infected, or causing crowding or other problems that can’t be fixed with other treatments. The area is numbed so you stay comfortable, and the tooth is gently loosened and removed. Afterward, your dentist will give you instructions to help the area heal and may discuss options to replace the missing tooth, such as an implant, bridge, or denture.
